Mesh office chairs

A mesh office chair has a backrest made of mesh instead of an upholstered back. The mesh lets air through, so your back stays cool even after a long working day, and it gives with your posture without letting you sink. Mesh chairs also look light and suit an open-plan office well.

What to look for in a mesh office chair

• Standards: if you work at the same desk for more than four hours a day, choose a chair that complies with NPR 1813 or NEN-EN 1335, such as the WL57 NPR, the WL77 NPR, the Flexaro Custom NPR or the Interstuhl Joyce JC2N1 NPR.
• Lumbar support: with a mesh back, adjustable lumbar support matters, because the mesh itself has little shape.
• Seat: almost all mesh chairs have an upholstered seat; only the back is mesh.
• User weight: most chairs take up to 125 kg, the WL77 NPR up to 160 kg.

Brands and series

From BNR itself there are the WL57 NPR, WL87 NPR, Mona mesh, Elize mesh and the FTS-II, among others. Sitland supplies the Team Strike, Mesh-Line, Nova, Leaf and Spirit Air, Interstuhl the Every and Joyce ranges and the Hero, Flexaro the Custom and SW-1, and Gollinucci Daniele the Reshape and Younique.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mesh office chair ergonomic?

That depends on the adjustment options, not on the mesh. A mesh chair with adjustable seat height, seat depth, lumbar support and armrests is just as ergonomic as an upholstered chair. To be sure, look for NPR 1813 or NEN-EN 1335.

Mesh or upholstered: which is better?

Mesh ventilates better and feels cooler; an upholstered back is softer and warmer and often available in more colours. If you get warm quickly or work in a warm room, mesh is the logical choice.
