Footrests: a healthy sitting posture starts with your feet

A good ergonomic working posture doesn't just start with the chair or desk — the position of the feet also plays an important role. When the feet cannot rest flat on the floor, extra pressure is placed on the lower legs, knees, and lower back. A footrest solves this by supporting the feet at the correct height. At BNR Office, you will find footrests for every situation and every body. Also, check out our other ergonomic accessories.

Types of footrests

Fixed footrests

Fixed footrests have a fixed height and angle. They are easy to use and ideal for users with a fixed workstation and a consistent sitting posture.

Adjustable footrests

Adjustable footrests can be adjusted in height and/or angle. Ideal for workplaces with multiple users or for people who adjust their working posture throughout the day.

Active footrests (rocking function)

Active footrests have a rocking function that allows the feet to move slightly while sitting. This stimulates blood circulation, reduces muscle tension, and keeps the user active — even during prolonged sitting work.

Anti-fatigue mats

Anti-fatigue mats are ideal for standing work at a sit-stand desk. They reduce the strain on feet, legs, and back during prolonged standing and encourage small movements that promote blood circulation.

When do you need a footrest?

  • If your feet do not rest flat on the floor at a correct sitting height
  • For complaints of the lower legs, knees, or lower back
  • If you are shorter than average and the desk height cannot be lowered further
  • When using a fixed desk height that is not adjustable
  • As an addition to an ergonomic office chair for optimal support

Combine with other ergonomic accessories

A footrest is most effective as part of a complete ergonomic workstation. Combine it with an ergonomic office chair, a monitor arm and an ergonomic desk for optimal working comfort.

Frequently asked questions about footrests

Is a footrest mandatory at the workplace?

According to the Working Conditions Act, the employer must ensure an ergonomically sound workplace. If an employee cannot place their feet flat on the floor at a correct sitting height, a footrest must be provided.

What is the difference between a footrest and an anti-fatigue mat?

A footrest is intended for use during seated work and supports the feet at the correct height. An anti-fatigue mat is intended for use during standing work and reduces strain on feet and legs during prolonged standing.

Does the employer reimburse a footrest?

Yes, in many cases, the employer reimburses ergonomic aids such as a footrest, especially if this is necessary for an ergonomically sound workplace. Please contact our customer service for advice on ergonomic workplace design.
