Acoustics and room dividers

Working more quietly without building work

Ambient noise is a frequently heard annoyance on the work floor and comes at the expense of concentration and calm. With acoustic solutions and room dividers you divide an open space into quiet workstations, meeting spots and calling corners. That is possible without permanent building work.

What it is about

Absorb, screen and enclose

Noise in an office is almost never a single source. It is the interplay of hard floors and walls that sound reflects off, of conversations that carry across the whole floor and of telephone calls that nobody can escape. Anyone who only hangs up a panel therefore often solves only part of it. We work with three measures alongside each other: absorbing on wall, ceiling and floor, screening between workstations and enclosing in a calling or focus booth.

Acoustic wall panels and suspended ceiling absorbers take reflection and reverberation out of the room. Desk screens and free-standing acoustic partitions limit the noise between workstations and at the same time make a layout visible: concentrated work happens here, meetings happen there. Phone booths and pods close the conversation off entirely, so that the rest of the floor stays quiet.

All of these solutions stand free in the room or hang on the wall or ceiling. No structural work is involved and modular systems can be moved or extended later. If what you are after is a fixed division that really separates spaces from one another, read on at partitions and system walls.

Six ways to tackle noise

Acoustic wall panels

Panels absorb sound and at the same time enhance the space. You hang them on the walls that the sound reflects off: behind a bench configuration, in a corridor or in a meeting room. In colour, size and layout they can be matched to the interior.

Ceiling absorbers

Suspended absorbers reduce reverberation in large spaces. In a high or open space the ceiling is the largest hard surface; that is where baffles and islands deliver the most gain without you losing floor area.

Floor damping

Carpet tiles and mats dampen footfall noise. They take the clicking of heels and the scraping of chairs out of the space. Combined with absorption on the wall or ceiling the effect is greatest.

Desk screens and bench dividers

Sound-absorbing desk screens limit the noise between workstations that face or stand next to each other. They clamp onto the tabletop or onto the bench rail and can be added per workstation without changing the configuration.

Free-standing walls, glass and greenery

Free-standing acoustic partitions divide an open floor into zones. Glass walls screen off while retaining light and sight lines, green walls combine division with greenery. On castors you can change the layout when the work changes.

Phone booths, pods and acoustic furniture

Acoustic furniture such as benches, pods and booths provides privacy for telephone calls and meetings. That keeps the rest of the floor quiet. A phone booth is the answer when screening is no longer enough.

Four groups to choose from

Acoustic panels and wall finishes

Wall and ceiling · absorbent · choice of colour and size

Panels remove the sound that would otherwise reflect off hard walls and ceilings. You use them where the reverberation is most troublesome: behind workstations, in corridors and in spaces where a lot of meetings take place. Besides individual panels we supply acoustic wall finishes that cover the whole surface, so that absorption and finishing are taken care of in one go.

Desk screens and bench dividers

On tabletop or bench rail · extendable per workstation · PET felt or upholstered

The screen between two workstations does two things: it breaks the direct sound from the neighbour and it gives a little visual calm. We supply them in PET felt and in an upholstered version, in heights from a low screen that leaves the sight line free to a high wall that screens the workstation off. They can be added per workstation to an existing bench configuration.

Room dividers and green walls

Free-standing · often on castors · zones without building work

A room divider turns one open space into several places with their own function: a quiet corner, a meeting spot, a waiting area. Because the walls stand free, the layout can be changed later as the work changes. With a planter as a divider or a green wall you combine the screening with greenery in the space.

Phone booths, pods and acoustic furniture

One to four people · with door, ventilation and light · movable

A phone booth is an enclosed cabin that is placed in the room, not built in. You make calls or hold meetings in it without disturbing the floor and without occupying a meeting room. They are available for one person to make calls and in larger versions for meetings with several people. Acoustic benches and alcove seats are the lighter variant: a place to sit apart for a moment, without a door.
